TALKBOY TAPES: Episode I Mikrofest preview with event planner, Tyler Ferrin of Boy Gorilla RecordsPosted by Darren Bridenbeck on Sep 03, 2009 in Podcasts
“TALKBOY TAPES” is an intimate, exploratory adventure of interviews, audio clips, and varied attempts of me trying to convince your dad that I can use his credit card by slowing down the speed of the cassette tape (remember Home Alone II?). Come get an honest breath of Portland's musical pulse in slow-mo, in high-mo, and. . . well . . . regular. mo. This week, we take a look at Boy Gorilla Records upcoming house-show festival: Mikrofest, which will be held at the The Beech House AKA: Camp Rainbow on September 5th 2009. With 22 bands playing over the span of 12 hours this event truly embodies the DIY, collective-based, all-ages, spirit of Portland's MTV (yuck-city) critically acclaimed music scene. But who cares what they have to say, right? As Tyler Ferrin says, “Fun is a theme of this,” not multimedia conglomerates telling us whats cool and whats not. Well, that last part is all me, not Tyler Ferrin. This interview was recorded honestly, and also honestly over a batch of french fries while Tyler was on his break from Potato Champion.

We spoke briefly with Patterns the other night about their history as a band, best and worst shows, and what it's like to be a diamond in a turd. They don't have a record out yet (we're crossing our fingers for a spring release) but they were kind enough to give us a quick update. Enjoy the natural backyard setting of the interview, complete with simulated traffic. INTERVIEW WITH PATTERNS

Recorded and produced by Dhani Rosa and Nelson Kempf of Portland's own Congratulations and The Old Believers, respectively. “Live . . . FROM HELL!” is a semi-regular podcast that examines the local music climate from the perspective of pain, suffering, and death. In this episode... Take time with us to reflect on one of Portland's most intimate show settings: “Folked Up.” The event was created two years ago, out of the ashes of a landlord ruling at 11 SE 19th Ave (AKA: Castle Greyskull, named after the late “SKELETOR the CAT”). This ruling that stated that “loud” or “drumming-type” music could not be played. In the wake of the news, Arya Imig and Darren Bridenbeck planned on hosting a one-day, acoustic, folk mini-festival at the house. During the event, people kept saying, “We should do this at MY house!”, and thus a the mini-festival was born. Nearly two years later the tenants of 11 SE 19th Ave were told to vacate on the claim that the bathtub was in danger of falling through the ceiling, into the kitchen (onto the stove, specifically speaking). The best farewell for this house was to host one last Folked Up which was hosted on July 30th, 2009. Castle Greyskull Folked UpVI Download
