IM BACK IN THE COUNTRY

It was a long vacation and an even longer re-acclimation to home. While
on the road I had the pleasure of reviewing two separate bands and
here I will document my experience with them.

The first and most importantly chronologically speaking is Sound
Semantics. Why Because their album "At the Drop of a Hat" is coming
out tomorrow at Work/Sound along with a pretty impressive tour
afterward. Heres some quick specs on the band: a two piece usually
just guitar simple percussion or other noises and two amazingly
skilled singers. The style is something that for a lack of
over-explanation: has probably been done before Im looking at you
Elliot Smith. Thats not to say its not worth listening to as there
are some things this band does right: the vocal control of Allie
Silverberg is impressive the melodies are unique so unique that
sometimes its even hard to see how someone would craft such things. But
they do craft such things somehow. The drawbacks to this album was that
it was so sparse there is so little happening that
if you dont entirely like one quality of it lets say the lyrics or
the melodies the guitar parts or the tones of the singers well
youre probably not going to like this record. And as neutral as a
statement as this is: if it clicks well then it clicks and youre
going to listen to the whole thing and love it. If not try picking up
Elliot Smith. If you didnt like Elliot Smith then you probably wont
want this in your CD player.

Sound Semantic Space: http://www.myspace.com/soundsemantics

nbsp

On another plane of musicianship I was able to hear a two song EP from
Van Go Lion. This is a two piece in an entirely different realm than
Sound Semantics: electropop. Their sound is energetic deep and
amazingly produced. It sounds kind of like a top 40s song that I
havent yet heard. The energy is there I can almost see or feel it
There are moments where this band goes into a state that would make
other 90s-pop-revivalist acts ashamed as this EP accomplishes it
incredibly well. By God I can see a parallel universe where I am
sitting as an eight year old next to my mom in our minivan in 1992 and
Im singing along to Van Go Lion as a child before I hit puberty and my
mom and I are both so happy. And we are driving back from getting
milkshakes together. This band is something I want to hear more from.

BRAINSTORM / PARDEE SHORTS / PRESCRIPTION PILLS BERBATIS PAN

Friday April the 16th Berbatis Pan

Wow. If you didnt make it out to this show you really should have. I know a lot of people say that about their show reviews so let me ponder how to explain this to you precisely... should I use a bullet-point list A pros/cons of what else you could have been doing and why this show was so vital A venn diagram

Let me just say three phrases:

1 BERBATIS PAN

2 FREE

3 ALL AGES.

I just hope that the over-agers drank enough to make this kind of event profitable for the venue because THIS is the kind of stuff I want to go to this summer. Maybe Im getting old maybe Im just crabby but the house show scene has lost its glimmer and this brought me back to why I love Portlands music scene.

nbsp

PRESCRIPTION PILLS

First time I ever saw this guy play he was by himself wearing a poncho playing entirely un-miced but with a small amp playing drum samples from his iPod. It was most easily defined as folk music speaking from what I could decipher about loss and wasting time. Now-a-days Prescription Pills has a real drummer way better sounding iPod-ized electronic backing and a knack for yelling a-la Spencer Moody too bold of a comment I dont think so. These songs are huge and its amazing the large amount of energy and music that can be made by just this. The songs are no longer folk induced and speak now of the city and of urban nowhereness. They broke their drum kit the lead singer spazzed out on and off the floor. He wore a leather hooded jacket and I was inspired by the overarching abilities of performers to pull off a number of genres at the same time. This is electronic punk at its best and when I heard that Guidance Counselor and Fake Drugs record label "Old Wave" had set their eyes on Prescription Pills to release their upcoming album it made me very very happy.

Photo from PRSCRPTN PILLS myspace

nbsp

nbsp

PARDEE SHORTS

You know what Lets talk about mixing genres. RIGHT NOW. Ive never seen a 100 live band no samples no iPod stuff just keyboards and drums make my brain think so many things in a long time. Since maybe. . . talkdemonic Within an instant this band can go from lounge/classical drumming and keyboard to precise mathy spasms to epic build ups with desperate screams. A number of keyboardists could pull off the same effect here because the music can become so fast and so spastic that it is difficult to track. But after seeing this band live for the third time Ive decided that the precision the energy and the pin-balling of emotions that this band puts into their songs is something highly notable. Keep an eye out for Pardee Shorts for I believe this is their summer to shine.

Photo from Pardee Shorts Myspace

nbsp

BRAINSTORM

Another two piece wrapped this show up nicely. With amazingly talented drumming keyboards tuba and guitar thats two instruments per band member mind you these guys are captivating energetic and formidable. Plus the drummer has a wireless/headset mic so that you are dealt a double-whammy by two waves of vocals. There was chanting there was low-pitched tuba drown-outs. Magic wizard carpets riding was all I dreamt of after seeing this band.

Rontoms was packed on Sunday December 20th but I somehow managed to find a a seat right up front during the transition from Patterns energetic opening set to Panthers swan song performance. Aside from a few in-house audio problems the set which included favorites from their catalog and a CAN cover was flawless and captivating. Heres video of the first song of their final performance.

CMJ diaries

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to attend the CMJ Music and Film
Fest in New York City on behalf of Potlatch in order to do you
know...business things aka attend exclusive parties meet totally rad
people see awesome bands eat lots of pizza.nbsp A large part of my time
was spent besides doing the aforementioned business items working as
a volunteer for the event.nbsp All in all it was an extraordinary
experience.nbsp During my trip I was attempting to create a travel log in
the form of emails to our very own Matt King.nbsp Unfortunately halfway
through my time the internet failed at the house I was staying at and
unlike every citizen of the Big Apple I do not have an iPhone or
Blackberry to aid me in making such on-the-fly updates.nbsp But I did have
my camera handy as well as a good-old-fashioned notebook in which to
write.nbsp And I also made it back with my thinking and
knowledge-retaining brain so that I can relate back to you my 5 days of madness.

My first day was email recorded so my initial feelings are preserved as they were on that day:

Wednesday October 21.nbsp 11:07 pm

I made it into NYC just hours ago and let me say she has already proven to be a saucy bitch. nbspUpon arrival I had pretty much decided to just stay in for the night but that was before I took another look at the schedule and realized that the almighty Raekwon was on the bill for tonight. nbspAfter very little coercion I managed to convince my wonderful host Dan to accompany me. nbspThe show was at B.B. Kings located somewhere within the neon hell that is Times Square. nbspThe line was unrelenting but so was our determination. nbspFor 2 hours we waited in line...to no avail. nbspDenied entrance we decided to hit the bodega for a beer and a bag of plantain chips. nbspThe night was not ideal but hell i reckon it could have been worse. nbspWell see what tomorrow brings...

Word up from the big ass apple. nbspIll holler at you clowns again tomorrow.

mad love

Liana

My second day was partially email recorded as I was typing it while
volunteering but was called away to actually do some work before I was
able to complete my update.nbsp Lucky for me gmail has that sweet auto save feature so the incomplete draft remains:

Friday October 22 2009.nbsp around 10 am

Let me start by saying that I witnessed a woman get hit by a taxi last
night.nbsp she was older 60 and her name was Julia.nbsp I am a little
traumatized not nearly as much as she is im certain.nbsp That was
probably the weirdest thing that occurred last night.nbsp Twas a sad sight
indeed but you know how the car crash scenario goes horrifying but you just cant stop looking...

Other than that the city is treating me well.nbsp I spent my evening with
my dearest friends boyfriend whom i had never before met.nbsp Hes a
darling boy he won my approval to date my friend and
incidentally he went to highschool and is friends with the drummer
from Cymbals Eat Guitars.nbsp We had a lovely night Ethiopian dinner and
a failed attempt to see Suckers there was a lot of confusion about
what time they were playing.nbsp The Studio at Webster Hall is a pretty
sweet little venue and though we missed Suckers we did see Bottle Up
and Go a fun 3 piece consisting of guitar drums and saxophone.nbsp
Talking with them afterward I discovered that the guitarist is actually from Oregon.

Anyhow Ray and I are going to try to catch the Cymbals show tonight
maybe catch up with his buddy afterward for a drink and a chat.nbsp I also
intend to to check out the XX tonight...hoping to make it in but the
presale tickets are sold out so well have to see.nbsp After the show Im
going to meet up with our friend Jake Rosenthal at his PopGun Booking afterparty. Sponsored by Rolling Rock = free beer = happy Liana.nbsp

This is Ray at the Ethiopian restaurant:

Im writing this email from the CMJ registration table where I have
been volunteering the past couple of days.nbsp Registration is held in the Judson Memorial Church on NYU campus...this building is lovely

...So going off of my partial bit there the volunteer work that
interrupted my email writing was pretty sweet that day.nbsp CMJ organizes
all these cool panels with various artists and industry folks and when
they are under attended or when they just have nothing better for
volunteers to be doing they will send you in to sit and watch.nbsp I
ended up getting to watch Sister Hazel talk about being an old ass band
that is still kicking remember radio in the 90snbsp that was them...nbsp
I also got to see the incredibly inspiring Emmanuel Jal talk about his
time as a child soldier in the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army.nbsp His
story was heart wrenching I definitely teared up a bit as he talked
about having to consider eating one of his fallen friends in order to
survive.nbsp Today he is a musician and poet who uses his art to raise
awareness about human trafficking and other crimes against humanity.nbsp
If you ever get a chance to see this guy speak do it.nbsp Ive read
various books on the subject of child soldiers but it was an incredible experience to hear his story related by the man himself.nbsp

Sister Hazel:

After I as relieved of my volunteer duties that day I went to meet up
with Ray for a very nice evening of perusing the amazing art collection
at MoMA.nbsp After that we had what should have been plenty of time to
get to the venue and catch the show Cymbals Eat Guitars show but I was
starving and Ray insisted that I try the street meat from around the
corner. street meat is a term that I picked up from a girl while
waiting in line for Raekwon.nbsp Simply put its meat from a food cart.nbsp
This particular street meat station is very well known and receives a
lot of local attention.nbsp Being a lover of food carts I was excited to
see what all the fuss was about.nbsp We arrive to a line which Im told
is typical for this spot but I am ready to wait.nbsp As it turns out we
had arrived at the end of a shift so we had to wait for the new crew
to come in and set up a whole new cart.nbsp We had stuck around so long
already that we decided to go ahead and see the switch-out through.nbsp We
ended up waiting about 50 minutes before I was finally served a heaping
bowl of chicken and lamb with rice which I smothered in delicious
saucy goodness.nbsp Let me just say totally worth it.nbsp Except we waited
so long that I didnt make it to the neighborhood of the show until it
had already started and then I couldnt locate the venue so I gave up
and instead headed to see the XX which I did make it into and they
were AMAZING.nbsp There apparently were some problems with the opening
acts who were set to be War Paint and First Aid Kit neither of whom
actually showed up.nbsp Depreciation Guild opened instead and they were really great.

After the show Dan and I went to the PopGun Booking after party which was raging.nbsp We both got quite toasty and left after...god knows how long.nbsp As we waited for the subway to come and take us home we found ourselves in midst of an awesome subway station concert and dance extravaganza something straight out of a movie lemme tell ya.nbsp I have the photos to prove it

Eesh this is getting to be wordy...I think Ill wrap it up now.

My last couple of days were spent...in drunk exploration mostly.nbsp It
rained real hard on Saturday.nbsp I sought some cozy shelter in this
awesome Ukrainian dive in the East Village called Odessa with Jake
Rosenthal and company.nbsp His friends were all really great and I got to
try my very first New York egg cream mighty tasty.nbsp I had my final
volunteer shift working the artist lounge got to watch some comedy acts and drink free vodka.nbsp

Sunday was spent brunching and shopping with my roommates sister and her husband.nbsp I picked up the best pair of boots of my life.

So as far as my detailed business report goes I guess I mostly have
to say that NYC is way more rad than us west coasters like to give it
credit for though as my minimal concert attendance shows my west
coast feet cannot keep up with east coast pace and punctuality.nbsp And
as for my fancy charts and diagrams that I felt necessary to have when
I attended my first business meeting after returning just like the important business execs that clog every east coast aircraft...

CMJ NYC = MAD LOVE.

I leave you now with the remainder of the few photos that I took during those 5 days.nbsp I hope they help to compliment the words that I have provided for you to chew on...

Cooking with bands is back with this dynamite installment starring Portlands very own murder ballad blues folk singing couple St. Frankie Lee

I got a bit emotional editing this video as I used to be in this band and you can hear my cello on the tracks. Im so proud that SFL is putting out their debut album.nbspThis is definitely the highest energy and most drunken cooking video to date Derrick Martin amp Chelsea Cambell are entertainers and they love to entertain The video also features K Sims and Luke from noise band LA Weed. We spoke briefly with Patterns the other night about their history as a band best and worst shows and what its like to be a diamond in a turd. They dont have a record out yet were crossing our fingers for a spring release but they were kind enough to give us a quick update. Enjoy the natural backyard setting of the interview complete with simulated traffic.

Recorded and produced by Dhani Rosa and
Nelson Kempf of Portlands own Congratulations and The Old Believers
respectively. “Live . . . FROM HELL” is a semi-regular podcast
that examines the local music climate from the perspective of pain
suffering and death.

In this episode...

Take time with us to reflect on one of
Portlands most intimate show settings: “Folked Up.” The event
was created two years ago out of the ashes of a landlord ruling at
11 SE 19th Ave AKA: Castle Greyskull named after the
late “SKELETOR the CAT”. This ruling that stated that “loud”
or “drumming-type” music could not be played. In the wake of the
news Arya Imig and Darren Bridenbeck planned on hosting a one-day
acoustic folk mini-festival at the house. During the event people
kept saying “We should do this at MY house” and thus a the
mini-festival was born.

Nearly two years later the tenants of
11 SE 19th Ave were told to vacate on the claim that the
bathtub was in danger of falling through the ceiling into the
kitchen onto the stove specifically speaking. The best farewell
for this house was to host one last Folked Up which was hosted on July 30th 2009.

HawkEye a fluxus moment

For most musicians creating and developing sounds becomes the only way to make sense of the human experience the only way to find liberation in their souls. Music sounds differently when the band believes in what theyre doing when there is a focus on the means and not just getting to the end. Hawkeye is a band that has made their way to Portland Oregon starting originally in Chicago around 2003 as the solo project of Matthew Strange. After playing his music in a few different configurations and cities Strange found a home in Portland and friends to play with who really mesh with him and the music.

Sylvia Calling
Download

Meeting with Mr. Strange writer composer and singer for Hawkeye took me into a conversation about foundations of inspirations and how the process of making music is something that solidifies yet that at the same time transcends existence.Strange has a love for music in itself as well as the process of creating. “It’s about digging deep inside yourself where you can connect to a place of vulnerability and honesty about life love and existential thoughts. Music can be a process of synthesizing feelings and emotions so you can give something back to other people”.

Strange says music is a selfless act an attempt to speak his mind and connect to people while not forgetting to write a really good song.

Walk of Shame
Download

"I think that life is short its like a blink of an eye. I think that a lot of people are living life just so worried about having security when they are old and retire or something like that instead of really thinking about what they are leaving behind and doing that now...today Being secure in your golden years wont mean s when you die. What you do here and now is whats important...what you leave behind is important. Thats all I really want to do is leave something good behind that hopefully inspires another human being or makes their life better. One thing thats always kept me going in life is the inspiration that Ive gotten from other musicians artists writers thinkers true people and great minds who have gone out on a limb to really give something back to the world against all the odds and despite any consequences."

Hawkeye while having a core of 60s psych/pop draws from many influences as Strange describes as A mix of lo-fi/hi-fi happiness sadness playfulness revolution dissolusion candy pop garage rock psychedelic brit pop pre-post punk moth funk explosion. A spark of creativity-a fluxus moment a Happening. With songs like Beautiful Mess Sylvia Calling minor bird the listener floats on waves of sound that massages the ears and kicks the brain into thinking about possibilities.
